My name is Tlell. I am from Canada. My home is in Vancouver. The first day of language classes have been going great – small groups of 3 students and lots of repition and drilling for practice. I can also say banana (keraa), pomegranate (anaar), and orange (suntala). And I can count to 10. There is a phrase here that seems very applicable to my learning whihc translates to “slowly, slowly”. Everything in Nepal is “slowly, slowly” including my language skills.
That’s hilarious! In Arabic it’s shoya shoya, in Swahili it’s poli poli, and I am sure there are hundreds more. I think Canada is greatly missing out on these slowly slowy sayings 🙂
My mom’s name is anaar (she spells it annar) – I always thought it was a Persian/Urdu word – so cool that it’s found it’s way into Nepali!
Oh and the ‘slowly slowly’ bit – ahaha. There’s this great passage in a book called ‘Maximum City’ (Suketu Mehta’s the author, and it’s about Bombay) – and he describes the ‘slowly slowly’ nature of the city brilliantly. Not sure if you’ll be able to find the book out there. I have it somewhere at home, and will try and email you the passage – am sure you’ll enjoy it/be able to relate.

I think you’ve now officially surpassed Sierra’s language development 🙂 LOVE the blog entries, Tlell – as I said, I’m living vicariously through you as I only wish we were able to be free and wandering as in times past…alas, it will come again. have you “settled in” (to whatever extend one possibly can at this point…) How is the adjustment process for you and Rex as a “team”?
